Derby Day!

Dateline: Cinco De Mayo, 2007. The Location: Flyover State Galore!

Adam: I flew to Columbus on Friday night.

Valerie: Saturday morning we woke up at the crack of dawn and drove 3 hours to Louisville, Kentucky (home of Colonel Sanders).

Adam: Along the way, we were treated to a lot of local color:

Valerie: Before the Derby (which is an all-day event) we stopped at the Louisville Slugger Museum, where 40% of the bats for major league baseball players are manufactured each year (including ARod and Jeter's bats).

(Valerie and Adam standing in front of a giant bat)
Adam: This does not imply a joint endorsement of ARod or Jeter. Go Orioles!

Valerie: Lousiville (pronounced, apparently, lou-uh-ville) is home of Churchill Downs, the site of the Kentucky Derby. Because we're "commoners," we could not afford actual "tickets" to the event (even cheap tickets to the Derby where still several hundred dollars). Instead, $40 got us admission to the infield. The infield, by the way, is not where you go if you actually want to see the race. If you're lucky, and can find a spot near the fence, you'll catch only a glimpse of the action.

(Check out the trademark Churchill Down's twin spires in the background)

(Horse #3 during Race #9.)

Adam: In case you were imagining something more genteel, the infield looks like the type of place you would raise hogs, only with lots of places selling cocktails - including the mint julep:

Valerie: The infield was overflowing with people. An estimated 150,000 people attended this year's derby. After much walking around, we finally met up with some friends from Kentucky.

Adam: The Kentucky Derby is a day where the ladies are sporting some pretty funky headgear:

Valerie: We even bet on some horses -- of course, with no success.

Adam: By the end of the day, we were pretty tired - which wasn't helped at all by the 1 hour wait just to get out of the stadium!

Valerie: After a fun-filled day, we drove back to Columbus in our pimp-mobile. It was purple!

The doog: ruff!
