Road Trip: Football Hall of Fame & Cirque du Soleil

May 12, 2007; Canton, Ohio

Canton, Ohio is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is about 2 hours north of Columbus, Ohio. It's literally in the middle of nowhere next to Interstate 71. Ironically, the tour of the museum is actually as long, if not shorter, than the ride to the Hall itself.

The museum is a three-floor architectural monstrosity. Can you figure out what the oblong object sticking out from the roof is?

At the entrance to the Hall is a life-size statute of Jim Thorpe. Thorpe was the first "superstar" in football.

The first exhibit is on the history of football. To give you a sense of how old this exhibit was, it said that (Justice and former pro football player) Byron "Whizzer" White had just retired. He actually retired in 1993. That being said, there is a lot of interesting history that neither of us knew -- for example, professional football developed from a collection of Ohio teams. We knew this state had to be good for something!

(The football used in Super Bowl VII. The Miami Dolphins went 17-0 that year.)

After a few more exhibits, we finally made it to the busts of the hall of fame inductees. Here is Valerie with Don Shula:

The Hall also has some interesting memorabilia:

(Us and the Lombardi Trophy)

(Adam and one of the exhibits on the Washington Redskins)

After a two hour ride back to Columbus and dinner at the tasty Northstar Cafe, we went to Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo." We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, but we snapped a nice one of the tent:

The show was pretty neat - some very impressive acrobatics, although the show lacked an overall storyline. We are still trying to figure out if everyone in the show were little people, or if they all looked small because they were next to one guy who resembled Andre the Giant.

Tomorow night, Adam heads back to Puerto Rico - Valerie stays in the flyover state.

Up Next: Valerie runs the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Adam does something equally exciting. The doog remains on the couch.
